ABRHS Students Commended for Giving Back - Acton, MA Patch: Logging 67,677 hours of charitable work, the 698 recipients of ABRHS Community Service Certificates, ABRHS Community Service Awards, and President’s Volunteer Service Awards impressed principal Alixe Callen.

“We don’t require community service,” Dr. Callen said, adding that she is pleased that volunteerism has become such a large part of the school’s culture. “We honor it because we believe in it.”

Nurturing a heart for helping others

Nurturing a heart for helping others: For a child to think about another family living a parallel, yet shockingly different life in Africa or Nepal or South America - or right here in Edmonton - can be a difficult stretch. But the truth is that some children walk miles for water or face imminent death due to violence.

How, as parents, friends, and teachers, do we nurture a sense of generosity in children and show them that community goes beyond national borders?

Several Edmonton families are working to do just that, and the benefits are touching and practical.

"We have a lot of places where we could go next with this," said Madison, a seventh-grader at Williamston Middle School. "They had flooding in Cambodia. There are still a lot of people hurting in Japan and there are still a lot of people hurting in Chile."
