The Tri-City News - Youth Rotary club comes to Tri-Cities

The Tri-City News - Youth Rotary club comes to Tri-Cities: Rotaract, an offshoot of well-rooted Rotary International, attracts people aged 18 to 30 years who are passionate about spreading positive change in their communities. Rotaract chapters exist around the world and elsewhere in the Lower Mainland.

In the fall of 2011, three local students set out to secure one of these youth philanthropy clubs for the Tri-Cities — but, first, they had to prove they were serious about committing the time and energy required for Rotaract.

Chartwell School to hold micro-philanthropy luncheon - MontereyHerald.com :: A micro-philanthropy luncheon will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, at Chartwell School, 2511 Numa Watson Road, Seaside.

Students share their research on a variety of small charities and micro-philanthropy organizations. Students will profile a small charity or organization of their choice and explain how it changes the lives of the people and communities it serves.

Valentine "Hunks" Raises $1,660 for Charity - Westlake, OH Patch: Westlake High School's student council collected $1,660 for charity in its second annual Valentine Hunks contest. Each year Student Council asks four junior boys and four senior boys to volunteer to collect money for a designated charity during Valentine's Day week.

Philanthropy 101

Philanthropy 101: Philanthropy 101 teaches high school students about philanthropy and civic engagement through hands-on experience. Students operate as a “mini foundation” and learn to explore issues in their community, develop a mission statement to focus on a specific need, publicize and manage a grant process, review and evaluate grant applications, conduct site visits with local nonprofits, and deliberate as a class to reach informed decisions. Based on this work, the youth leaders award $5,000 in grants to local nonprofits that are making a difference in their community. In addition, students dedicate time and energy to the cause through volunteer hours and creative fundraising strategies that boost the grant amount.

Charity video wins Barrington High visit from Rihanna | WGN-TV: While Rihanna has been mostly cancelling concerts lately because of laryngitis, she’s adding a special appearance for a local high school when she’s in the Chicago area on Friday.

A video produced by some Barrington High School students, highlighting some of their charity initiatives set to Rihanna’s song “Diamonds,” won a contest.

The high school scored a visit from Rihanna before her show in Chicago on Friday.

Parliamentary inquiry into Growing Giving launched

Parliamentary inquiry into Growing Giving launched: Former cabinet minister David Blunkett will be joined by Tory MP Andrew Percy and Liberal Democrat Peer Baroness Tyler in chairing the inquiry which launched yesterday with an initial focus on giving by children.

The launch was accompanied by CAF-commissioned research that estimated that children between nine and 11 years of age donate nearly �20m to charity each year, or �1.99 each a month. In its first stage, the Growing Giving inquiry will be investigating how to harness and grow giving by under-18s, and in particular how to instil habits of giving for later life.

CAF has issued a call for written evidence on how to get young people giving more.

Cool Kids Campaign Charity Run Outgrows Lutherville Church - Lutherville-Timonium, MD Patch: For three years the charity hosted its signature fundraiser at Church of the Nativity just off of Ridgely Road, but popularity and safety concerns have driven the campaign to Goucher College.

The move was announced last week, following a merger with another non-profit 5k hosted by the Baltimore Association of Health Underwriters.

Leadership awards for high school students | UTSanDiego.com: The second annual Peter Chortek Leadership Awards this week were given to Jenna Arocha, Jonathan Feldman and Sasha Pines, who were each awarded $3,600 and each received an additional $1,800 in a donor advised-fund at the foundation to promote ongoing philanthropy.

Peter and Elaine Chortek created the award to foster Jewish communal involvement by rewarding Jewish high school students who are practicing the value of tikkun olam, repairing the world.
