Southport Student Launches Charity to Benefit Animal Shelters - Giving - Fairfield, CT Patch: As the end of summer draws near, Southport student Elena Ault, 11, can consider her vacation a success.

Ault launched the charity "Pennies 4 Pounds" this month. Her goal with Pennies 4 Pounds is to raise money for animal shelters, humane societies, rescue groups, animal rights organizations, and pounds. She plans to fundraise through events like dog walks, lemonade stands, and car washes, as well as through the Pennies 4 Pounds website.

Ridgefield’s Philanthropic Youth Council looks for new members | The Ridgefield Press: Since its founding in 2001, the PYC has granted over $140,000 to deserving charities within the community and was awarded the Youth Philanthropy award for the State of Connecticut by the Association of Fundraising Professionals in 2010. The group meets every other Tuesday at the Boys and Girls club from September through May each year. At these meetings, members discuss and organize creative fundraisers to support local causes.

The younger the child is when the discussion begins about giving, the more it becomes a matter of practice and habit that continues into adulthood.

According to developmental psychologist Marilyn Price Mitchell, children who perform acts of kindness experience increased wellbeing, popularity and acceptance among peers. This, in turn, leads to better classroom behaviour and higher academic achievement.

The St. Cloud Times reports (http://on.sctimes.com/1bhYw94 ) Ethan Neid first hosted the event last year and donated the $150 he raised to local charity."
