One Percent for Good

One Percent for Good: Volftsun and few other teens in Northern Virginia where she lived pooled their money and together decided which organizations in the area and in Israel would receive their gifts. This was through the Jewish Youth Philanthropy Institute (JYPI), an organization her mom had helped co-found. Both immigrants from the former Soviet Union, Volftsun’s parents felt indebted to the Jewish community for bringing them to America and made it their mission to teach their daughters the importance of tzedakah.

Youth Philanthropy Council | YouthServe Birmingham: he Youth Philanthropy Council seeks to involve young people, ages 15-18, in the learning and giving aspects of philanthropy. We define philanthropy as: the giving of time, treasure, or talent for the common good. We will learn together about non-profits, professionalism, grant writing and grant making, as well as the needs of the Birmingham Community. We will have dynamic speakers and visit cool places all over Birmingham. YPC participants will also create a Request for Proposals, so that local organizations can apply for grants from the YPC.

Nonprofit Outreach helps homeless teens celebrate graduation: Jones is one of 25 homeless or formerly homeless seniors who received help from the faith-based organization this past year to enable them to earn their high school diploma or GED. The organization provides necessities and services, such as food, clothing, transportation, tutoring, textbooks — even fancy duds for prom and caps and gowns for graduation — for more than 400 homeless young men and women aged 14-24 each year, according to its website.

The graduating students and Outreach employees gathered at an open house graduation party Saturday at Post Road Christian Church on Indianapolis' Far Eastside. Local companies, organizations and residents donated goods and services for graduation gifts for the youths.

Youth hope to better community with projects: Area youth with a vision of how to make their community a better place will have the chance to make a positive change with the help of the Fremont Area Community Foundation.

The foundation announced the winners of its first Youth Philanthropy Contest Wednesday during a ceremony at Midland University. Young people in grades K-12 were invited this spring to compete in the Youth Philanthropy Contest. The contest asked for project ideas that would better the community and could be completed within nine months. Winning projects received a $1,000 grant from the foundation.

Teen Philanthropy Movement Growing | The Jewish Week: Josh Satok is bringing Jewish teen philanthropy to Nova Scotia, Canada. The recent Yale University graduate was inspired to do so by a class on grant making he took at school.

“Basically, in this course we were the guinea pigs. A private donor gave us $50,000 and said, ‘You kids are smart. Do something good with this.’”

The YPI grant motivates high school students across Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom to learn about local charities, within the community and empowers students to advocate for a charity.

Maddie is from a small town in Michigan. Prior to her trip to Malawi her biggest problems revolved around school, boys and the mall.
