Miles for Smiles, Press Uncuffed place first in Do Good Challenge - The Diamondback : News: "Miles for Smiles, a team working to get better dental care for children in rural Honduras, and Press Uncuffed, a group raising awareness about imprisoned journalists around the world, each took home the $5,000 grand prize in their category at the Do Good Challenge on Tuesday.
The fourth annual event, held in Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center, ends the eight-week competition between 69 student teams, each with a chosen cause and philanthropy plan."

The Daily Pennsylvanian :: Students pledge 10 percent of future income: "or the rest of their lives, four Penn students have decided to give 10 percent of what they earn to charity. 

On Monday, the students joined Giving What We Can, a national organization whose 1,000 members have pledged to donate 10 percent of their future lifetime income to charities working to eradicate poverty. Part of a movement towards “effective altruism,” GWWC aims to do the most possible good with the money available. Effective altruism means not just giving more, but giving more effectively."

Pittsfield teens using soccer to help poor youths in Haiti - Washington Times: "Here you’re so used to so much structure and organization to the game,” said Pittsfield High School sophomore Jackson Rich. “But there, they don’t have the resources or the equipment or anything. They have to make do. But when they’re out there playing, they’re loving every minute of it.”

Rich, who traveled to Haiti last January, enlisted his friends to join him on the journey back there during the spring school recess. They’ll be volunteer coaches through the Housatonic-based nonprofit, HotFutbol - “Hot” being an acronym for “health, opportunity, and training.”"

Ride of the Mustang reaches $500,000 goal for cancer research | Local Sports | Airdrie City View: "Founded in 2011, the event has become one of the top fundraisers organized by students in Alberta, with all proceeds going towards the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation to benefit the support of children’s cancer research.
According to student organizer Breanne McPhee, the “Ride for Five” target could not have been attained without the last minute partnership with École Edwards Elementary School, which had 500 of its students taking part in 10-minute intervals on tricycles.
“It’s been fantastic to see the entire community behind the cause,” said McPhee. “It just goes to show regardless of how young or old, or how big or small, you can still make a difference for a great cause.”"

'Arizona Gives Day' encourages donations to strapped nonprofits - CBS 5 - KPHO: "There's really a lack of community-service opportunities for students who need it most," said Adam Rubin with RENEW. Rubin recognized the need for kids and teens in low-income areas to make their communities better. So he and a partner started holding leadership workshops in Tanzania.

"They performed a school cleanup and actually donated to the school trash cans, brooms, and engaged over 600 students at this school," Rubin said.

Now Rubin is bringing what he learned back home. He'll host a workshop this July with 20 Phoenix high schoolers."
