Lessons in history, giving mark county's birthday - San Antonio Express-News: This week, youth board members visited schoolchildren throughout the county to educate students on not only the county birthday but important moments in local history.
At such a young age, many in their audience know little about Hancock County. Many aren't even sure if it's a place or a person, Greenfield-Central High School freshman Maddie Wise, who gave presentations this week, told the Daily Reporter (http://bit.ly/1d1fzyV ).

Student volunteering worth �175m a year, report says: Student volunteering is worth �175m a year, according to a report published today by the National Union of Students.
The report, The Student Volunteering Landscape, says that 725,000 students, or 31 per cent of the student population, currently volunteer, and contributed an average of 44 hours a year.

Victoria’s vulnerable children benefit from young Oak Bay philanthropists - Victoria News: Every year Grade 11 students in the Planning class participate in the Youth Philanthropy Initiative, a program funded by the Toskan Casale Foundation, which has students work in groups, pick and research a local charity and present their findings to class. The charity of the top presentation receives a donation after a vote by judges, made up of teachers and the previous year’s winners. This is the second time in four years the centre got the $5,000 prize.

Brown Middle School Students Help Earn $50,000 for Charity: Students at R.A. Brown Middle School learned that a video they created in support of the Thirst Project helped earn the charity $50,000 for their work in providing safe, clean drinking water to communities in Uganda and Kenya.

Middle School Student Raises Funds for Alzheimer’s Research at TSRI: welve-year-old Jenny Kafas doesn’t know anyone with Alzheimer’s, but after watching a film about a woman with the disease, she was moved to tears and knew she wanted to help. The determined middle school student spent last summer, when she was eleven, utilizing her creative talents by making and selling purple lanyard keychains, raising $128 for Alzheimer’s research at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI).
