The Tri-City News - Youth Rotary club comes to Tri-Cities

The Tri-City News - Youth Rotary club comes to Tri-Cities: Rotaract, an offshoot of well-rooted Rotary International, attracts people aged 18 to 30 years who are passionate about spreading positive change in their communities. Rotaract chapters exist around the world and elsewhere in the Lower Mainland.

In the fall of 2011, three local students set out to secure one of these youth philanthropy clubs for the Tri-Cities — but, first, they had to prove they were serious about committing the time and energy required for Rotaract.

Each year Student Council asks four junior boys and four senior boys to volunteer to collect money for a designated charity during Valentine's Day week.

Philanthropy 101: Philanthropy 101 teaches high school students about philanthropy and civic engagement through hands-on experience. Students operate as a “mini foundation” and learn to explore issues in their community, develop a mission statement to focus on a specific need, publicize and manage a grant process, review and evaluate grant applications, conduct site visits with local nonprofits, and deliberate as a class to reach informed decisions. Based on this work, the youth leaders award $5,000 in grants to local nonprofits that are making a difference in their community. In addition, students dedicate time and energy to the cause through volunteer hours and creative fundraising strategies that boost the grant amount.

Charity video wins Barrington High visit from Rihanna | WGN-TV: While Rihanna has been mostly cancelling concerts lately because of laryngitis, she’s adding a special appearance for a local high school when she’s in the Chicago area on Friday.

A video produced by some Barrington High School students, highlighting some of their charity initiatives set to Rihanna’s song “Diamonds,” won a contest.

The high school scored a visit from Rihanna before her show in Chicago on Friday.

Parliamentary inquiry into Growing Giving launched: Former cabinet minister David Blunkett will be joined by Tory MP Andrew Percy and Liberal Democrat Peer Baroness Tyler in chairing the inquiry which launched yesterday with an initial focus on giving by children.

The launch was accompanied by CAF-commissioned research that estimated that children between nine and 11 years of age donate nearly �20m to charity each year, or �1.99 each a month. In its first stage, the Growing Giving inquiry will be investigating how to harness and grow giving by under-18s, and in particular how to instil habits of giving for later life.

CAF has issued a call for written evidence on how to get young people giving more.

Midland High Students in Philanthropy Help Build Habitat For Humanity House: MIDLAND--Midland High School Students in Philanthropy showed their dedication when it comes to helping Saturday as they worked with the Midland Habitat for Humanity to build a house.

It's not every day you find a large group of teenagers willing to wake up early on a Saturday morning knowing they'll be doing manual labor.

"Just that fact that I get the opportunity to help out it feels really good to me," said Midland HS Student in Philanthropy Jodi Wright.

Philanthropy contest deadline approaches: COLUMBUS — Youths and young adults looking to make a positive impact in the community can get a financial boost toward that end through a new contest.

The Columbus Area Philanthropy Council and Columbus Area Community Foundation Fund are introducing the Youth Philanthropy Contest.

Targeting those in kindergarten through age 22, the contest will award eight $1,000 grants to winners to implement their projects.
