(CBS) NEW YORK If you have young children, the whole birthday party planning thing can get a little crazy. Some parents end up spending hundreds and even thousands of dollars on elaborate parties at fancy spots when the kids would be just as happy playing with a small group of friends at home. Other parents are using party time to teach their children an important lesson about giving to others. Some families ask their guests to bring donations for a certain charity instead of gifts for the birthday boy or girl. Last year, my friend Becky threw a party for her daughter and told us to bring a new bottle of vitamins instead of presents. The vitamins went to orphans in China, which was a powerful reminder of how much we take for granted."
