Society scene: pennies untiy school - South Florida Sun-Sentinel.com: "The 400 students at Unity School in Delray Beach have been helping Haiti since long before January's devastating earthquake.
In their latest undertaking, students raided their piggy banks, set up stands to sell cookies, brownies, hot chocolate and lemonade, performed household chores, sold craft items, and worked jobs to raise funds and awareness for the cause. Through their efforts, students raised $2,818. That figure was matched 50 percent by the Barr Foundation of Boca Raton, bringing the total to $4,227."

The Student Philanthropy Council (SPC) provides a year-long, community-based service learning opportunity for students. Council members apply and develop their skills of critical analysis, applied research and group-decision making to comprehend community needs and assets, and to select effective organizational solutions in the Upstate region. The grant making sequence includes developing a request for proposals (RFP), creating an evaluation process, reviewing grant applications, conducting site visits, deciding the final grant awards, creating and implementing a public awards celebration, and drafting a final report to the Brennan Family Foundation, the underwriters’ of the program."
