HPA students learn importance of philanthropy | North Hawaii News: I continually seek to help my students understand the importance of philanthropy,” said Piercy, whose sixth graders were studying East Asia and social justice issues.
From that conversation, The Will to Give was born. As Piercy’s classes prepared to study the great continent of Africa, his friend donated $6,000, and gave the students an unprecedented opportunity to learn not only about the geography, environment, and culture of their respective countries, but to delve even deeper by researching their country’s largest social justice issues and supporting those issues with a donation from the class. The students studied eight countries—Djibouti, Egypt, Kenya, Madagascar, Senegal, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia.
