Small But Elegant Philanthropy in South Dakota - NPQ - Nonprofit Quarterly: n pursuit of strengthening a community, $1,000 can be spent in a flash. This story, however, shows that a gift of this size can also keep on giving—in this case, by very likely making a lifelong impression on children.

Philanthropy-The Youth Career Choice
Philanthropy-The Youth Career Choice: When I speak to people involved in philanthropy, I often hear that it was something that they “fell into.” For some it was a career they found after facing feelings of dissatisfaction in the corporate world. Today, gears have shifted, and many young adults are choosing philanthropy as their primary career goal. Ask any major in the department of Political Science at the University of Washington. If a student isn’t interested in public policy or government, chances are that nonprofit work and campaigns are his or her main priority.

Morristown boy turns birthday into fundraiser for Hurricane Sandy victims : Morristown Green: Hurricane Sandy struck as Giovanni was getting ready to celebrate his ninth birthday. His thoughts turned to children affected by the super storm.
“I already have a lot of stuff and a lot of the people over at the Shore lost everything. Some of them don’t even have houses to go home to. They got it a lot worse than we did here. I hope with the items that my friends donated, it will make the kids over there not as sad,” Giovanni said earlier this month, when he was joined for his birthday by about 30 classmates at the AMA Fight Club in Whippany.

Claudia Jacobs: Charity Begins at Home?
Claudia Jacobs: Charity Begins at Home?: Most people (if they think about this at all), think that people grow up being charitable because of the way they were brought up by their parents. New research soon to be released from a study of college students taking non-profit and philanthropy courses across 34 universities in three Midwestern states, found that might not be the case. In this forthcoming study 51 percent of students surveyed said they never discussed their parents' volunteer work or philanthropy with them and 37 percent relayed that they only briefly discussed it. Only 13 percent of students reported discussing their parents' volunteer work or philanthropy in any kind of in depth manner. But yet these same students were intrigued and curious enough to enroll in a course where students would be learning about philanthropy by granting funds to local non-profits.
