Coaches and peer networks are helping kids of the wealthy give wisely

Growing up, Jos Thalheimer knew his family was wealthy. He lived in a mansion with tennis courts and a swimming pool. He went to Choate Rosemary Hall, an elite Connecticut boarding school. But his family, which inherited the legacy created when his great-grandfather founded the American Oil Co. (Amoco) in 1910, rarely talked to him about their money or what it meant. Although his father directed a family foundation that gave away $1.5 million annually, Thalheimer didn't even learn about it until his late teens."

PNC's Bruce Bickel explains how to teach your kids money management and charitable giving

Even children as young as six or seven should learn about the responsibilities of wealth. So says Bruce Bickel, senior vice-president at the wealth management unit of PNC Financial Services Group (PNC ) in Pittsburgh. Since joining the bank in 1988, the plain-speaking U.S. Naval Academy graduate and former Baptist minister has built a national practice helping clients establish private charitable foundations. He also teaches families how to pass on philanthropic values to younger generations. Bickel discussed his ideas with correspondent Aaron Pressman."

This weekend, kids can learn there's more to do with a dollar than spend it.

They also need to be taught about saving and sharing money, said Dave Schmitz, a Green Bay community police officer.

Schmitz will work with youths Sunday on a Kids Share venture sponsored by the Women's Fund of Greater Green Bay.

By donating a dollar to a good cause, kids can learn the importance of philanthropy."

(CBS) NEW YORK If you have young children, the whole birthday party planning thing can get a little crazy. Some parents end up spending hundreds and even thousands of dollars on elaborate parties at fancy spots when the kids would be just as happy playing with a small group of friends at home. Other parents are using party time to teach their children an important lesson about giving to others. Some families ask their guests to bring donations for a certain charity instead of gifts for the birthday boy or girl. Last year, my friend Becky threw a party for her daughter and told us to bring a new bottle of vitamins instead of presents. The vitamins went to orphans in China, which was a powerful reminder of how much we take for granted."
