Students learn about philanthropy : Community

Students learn about philanthropy : Community: "For the past six weeks, the Sturgis Williams Middle School students enrolled in Becky Peterson’s exploratory class “Students Building a Better World,” have been learning about philanthropy and the many ways of helping those in need.

The students began by first reading James Stovall’s book “The Ultimate Gift,” a story of how a self-centered and privileged man changes into a selfless man who cares for others. Many of the class activities were then based on the chapters in that book. For example, to coordinate with the “Gift of Friendship” chapter, the students discussed recent instances in which they might have let a friend down. They then had to write a letter or call that friend to remedy the situation. For the chapter titled “Gift of Problems,” the students had to identify problems either locally or around the world and then figure out how they could make an impact."

3 Starting Points for Raising Do-Good Kids | Louise Storm

3 Starting Points for Raising Do-Good Kids | Louise Storm: "If you were to look under my dining room table on any given evening, you'd see four sets of little feet wiggling around. While my husband and I never dreamt we'd enjoy such a full table, our gratitude for this merry bunch is only matched by our sense of responsibility to do well at this parenting thing. All of us -- mammas, grandpas, honorary aunties -- want the best for our children, but there are myriad pathways to raise a happy and whole child. I'd like to suggest that one approach is to be a "Philanthro-Parent.""

Loud New Voices Emerge to Protect Quiet Library Spaces - NPQ - Nonprofit Quarterly

Loud New Voices Emerge to Protect Quiet Library Spaces - NPQ - Nonprofit Quarterly: "Last week, two separate events brought attention to the precarious place of public libraries in various parts of the country. In Missouri, a group of about 100 students traveled by bus from Kansas City to Jefferson City in the hope of meeting with the governor to relay their dissatisfaction with his proposed $6 million budget cut to the state’s library system. In New York City, the presidents of the Brooklyn Public Library, Queens Public Library, and New York Public Library issued a joint report, “Long Overdue: NYC’s $1 Billion Library Fine,” to draw attention to the terrible physical condition of many of the city’s libraries and the jaw-dropping price tag to repair them. Although the Missouri campaign seems to be mostly student-driven while the NYC campaign is broader, they both are relying heavily on social media to generate discussion about the multiple roles that libraries hold for students and adults and the need for more stable funding sources to support them."

Community News - Teton Valley News: Page2

Community News - Teton Valley News: Page2: "Now in its 4th year, the program provides students with a keen understanding of the granting process as they thoughtfully review grant applications, meet with nonprofit leaders from applying organizations and award $3,000 to local charities.    According to a 2014 student philanthropist, “I didn’t realize our community needed so many things. I thought that all the requests were important but we had to narrow it down…” Not only does the program help to develop a deeper understanding of the granting process, but students also get a firsthand look at the many roles that nonprofits play in our community in meeting the needs of their fellow citizens."

Best Charity Sites to Teach Kids About Giving

Best Charity Sites to Teach Kids About Giving: "This poses a challenge. How do you effectively instill in young minds the power of monetary giving, if their entire experience is with pixels on a screen? After all, placing money in a church collection (religion tops U.S. individuals’ charitable giving), is a physical act, one that can then be easily connected to the upkeep and running of the organization and any programs it runs."

Charitable giving isn’t just for adults | Collingwood Enterprise Bulletin

Charitable giving isn’t just for adults | Collingwood Enterprise Bulletin: "Talk about giving a portion of one’s money, or even a portion of one’s time, to charity is not a common one to be had between parents and their young adults. Charity is mostly seen as solely an adult’s cause, one that does not need to be thought about at this time in our lives. I, however, see charity as a much more beneficial and important aspect to becoming a considerable part of the community.

The idea of giving back to society should be stressed just as much as giving back to the economy."
