Teen philanthropist drops by DIS before premier of award-winning bio film: n 2004, Zach Bonner's family and neighbors stockpiled supplies, food, and water in anticipation of a direct hit by Hurricane Charley. In their suburb of Tampa, Florida, they were ready. But then Charley took a sharp right turn. The Bonners were relieved that their community was spared the storm's wrath, but they soon learned that Floridians to the south of them were in terribly rough shape. Charley had struck the Fort Myers and Port Charlotte areas with its greatest intensity, and residents found themselves without power, necessities, and - in some cases - homes.

Those were the key findings of new research results released today by Do Something, a group working to get young people involved in social change.

Fundraising in school - it's not all about shaking the charity can | Teacher Network | Guardian Professional: Our school is a large mixed comprehensive in Lincolnshire that prides itself not only on academic success, but also on creating a school ethos with relationships and community at its heart. As part of this, we actively encourage all students to get involved in fundraising activities for both local and international charities. Although our starting point was altruistic, we've found that at the same time as raising money for others we're reaping rich rewards as a school.

National Philanthropy Day Extends to San Diego Youth
National Philanthropy Day Extends to San Diego Youth: Of the several honorees, a young man named Marquis Snowden was nominated by the Jacobs Center
for Neighborhood Innovation. “It’s all about the mindset that you have,” reflects Marquis.
Marquis is a 9th grader currently attending Helix Charter High School, though his philanthropic efforts
began when he was just a fourth grader at Lemon Grove Elementary School. At the time, the school
did not have a climbing wall for the students and lacked funding to purchase one. Marquis took it upon
himself to raise the money for the climbing wall. Through his serving heart and entrepreneurial spirit,
Marquis raised more than $1,100 to fund the wall. Rallying his fellow classmates, they sold lemonade,
fruit and healthy snacks to pay for the new climbing wall.

'Fundraisers are responsible' for low youth giving
'Fundraisers are responsible' for low youth giving: Catherine Miles, of blood cancer charity the Anthony Nolan Trust, was speaking at the CFG members’ meeting in London, where she predicted three key trends in fundraising for the next three to five years.
The first of these was that the tendency for a large proportion of donations to come from a small percentage of donors is likely to continue. “It means that your fundraising team’s relationship with supporters is absolutely critical,” she said.

More than child's play: Engaging youth in philanthropy: When nine-year-old Alaina Podmorow agreed to join her mother one evening at a presentation by author and activist Sally Armstrong, she was just hoping to cadge a later bedtime. But the presentation changed Alaina's life. Armstrong spoke about the lack of education for women and girls in Afghanistan and Alaina was riveted.
"I knew right away that I wanted to raise money to pay for one teacher in Afghanistan for one year," she recalls. "I went up and talked to Sally and told her how I wanted to do something and she told me to contact Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan. I contacted them and we have become partners."
