Young philanthropists can effect real change - The Denver Post
Young philanthropists can effect real change - The Denver Post: "An excellent example is 24-year-old Denver native Jessica Posner. While studying abroad in Nairobi, Kenya, Jessica learned that 66 percent of girls in Kibera — the largest slum in Africa — trade sex for food as early as age 6 and that only 8 percent of girls in Kibera ever attend school. Jessica found this situation to be intolerable and co-founded Shining Hope for Communities (shininghopeforcommunities.org) to combat gender inequity and poverty in Kibera. With limited resources, the organization opened the area's first free school for girls and, in just a few years, has created a gardening program; a library; an Internet-ready computer center; ecologically friendly latrines that convert waste to methane gas, which can be used for cooking and electricity; income-generating projects for women living with HIV/AIDS; and Kibera's first accessible community health center, staffed by a full-time nurse. In recognition of her work, Jessica received the 2010 VH-1 Do Something Award, including a $100,000 stipend that she's investing in more programs for girls and women in Kenya."

Growing Younger: Youth Recruitment in an Aging Nonprofit Sector
Growing Younger: Youth Recruitment in an Aging Nonprofit Sector: "A rapidly aging Canadian workforce, coupled with a decline in birth rates, creates a looming challenge for employers across job sectors — that of replacing retirees.
In the nonprofit world, where limited funds and job insecurity are inevitable, the mean age of employees has reached an unparalleled 43.3. Despite increased competition among young graduates in the workforce, recruiting young staff for nonprofits has become particularly difficult — and exceedingly pressing.
Last summer the HR Council for the Nonprofit Sector released a report entitled Growing Younger: Tapping into the Talents of Early Career Employees, which examined the dearth of young people applying to nonprofits. It cited a 2009 Ipsos Reid study that found only 2% of the 16 to 27-year-old Canadians surveyed viewed the nonprofit sector as a desirable field."

What Messi, Xavi and Iniesta can teach the UK about charitable giving | Musa Okwonga | Independent Eagle Eye Blogs: "There is certainly an appetite for learning about giving in UK schools. In 2007, with support from the investment bank Credit Suisse, we introduced the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI), a Canadian programme, to ten schools in London. YPI, which was devised by Julie Toskan-Casale, the founder of MAC Cosmetics, has a simple premise. In each YPI school, students aged between 14 and 16 form teams of three or four, and go into their local communities, visiting and researching charities who are addressing issues that they feel strongly about. Having done so, they return to school and give impassioned presentations in front of their peers, advocating for the charities whose causes they have taken up. The winning team, decided by a panel of judges, receives an award of 3,000 on behalf of their charity. YPI is an initiative to which pupils have taken with great relish; it is now in over 100 UK schools, and by the summer, over 40,000 participants will have distributed over 700,000 to local charities. Recently, too, the family trust of Sir Ian Wood, one of Scotland’s wealthiest businessmen, has taken over the direction of YPI in Scotland, in the aim that it will be in 1 in 8 of all schools there within three years."
